Residency #2: Eric Ellingsen: Radical Imagination Community – Perceiving Academy / 04-15/07.2016

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ellingsen’s work is informed by collaborative learning through experienced experiments, relational thinking, walking, ecology and ecological economies, translation, performance and perception. The heart of Ellingsen’s work involves learning how to learn. This takes place through the design of site and institution specific works, in which learning learns across different creative spatial practices. These projects involve growing languages and the ability to translate meanings across disciplines.
From 2009-14, Ellingsen co-directed and taught at the Institute for Spatial Experiments (University of the Arts, Berlin), an art education experiment for learning how to learn, started by Olafur Eliasson. Currently he is Visiting Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Previously he taught at Cornell University, AAP; the Illinois Institute of Technology; and the University of Toronto, Daniels.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

In the context of his residency for Artecitya, Eric plans to work with a community of interested participants to open an experimental Perceiving Academy. The Academy will be a platform for learning how to learn, as well as a sustainable community practice run by participants that will inherit the institute platform after Eric’s residency ends. “We will create a constitution for our community by walking and cooking together while we occupy public spaces of the city. The city will be our classroom, our studio, our office, our laboratory. While we walk we will forage for architectural materials, as well as conduct ‘classes’ in different public spaces throughout the city. The school will be a choreographed archipelago of actions and designs as ‘platforms’ situated in public spaces. The platforms will host a moving festival of speakers, actions, performances, and politics.”
