Strasbourg, December 2016

To help us develop our artistic process for the Artecitya Project, we invited seven civic services to join Apollonia. From september to may 2017, they work on the development of the citizen lab project, in Strasbourg and Colmar. As they are all wonderful but all different, we introduce them to you.

Can you introduce yourself ? How old are you ? What have you been studying ?
I am Claire I am 24 years old. After the beginning of my studies in Visual arts and geography, I got into the Urban institute of Lyon where I could do an exchange at the university of Montreal for one semester. I recently graduated in ASPU from the INSA/ENSAS.

Why did you apply to this civic service ?
I was always interested in doing a civic service. But I was following my urban studies with passion. My studies are now over and I am at the age limit to do a civic service, so it’s the perfect timing! Moreover when I saw the description of the mission offered by Apollonia : «Artecitya/Imaginer la ville de demain » I was seduced right away by the program, that’s why I wanted to commit myself in this cultural and urban project , following the vision of the city of tomorrow.

How are you involved in the Artecitya project ?
Being really sensitive to the vegetal aspect of the city, I believe in the development of the collaborative garden in the Robertsau. To sum it up briefly, I am working on an urban planning project, urban, citizen and artistic, closely related to the Artecitya principles.

What’s your reflexion process regarding the importance of art and human being in our cities ?
I think art and the city are paramount. A city without art would be meaningless and would be only a concentration of housings without aesthetics, which would not trigger any emotion. While an artistic presence in the public space can make the urban movements more surprising and create places of conviviality. Unfortunately, today, some new areas are built quickly and only to improve the housing supply without any real reflection on the aesthetics. In this way, areas are uniform throughout in France. In order to avoid this monotonous city landscape, it is imperative that the production of the city be a gathering of several people. Each actor (artists, architects, urban planners, citizens or researchers) must reflect on his vision of the city so that future development projects are sustainable for a good and pleasant city. Urban planning will have the role of accompanying the transformation of uses in a development project. The intervention of the artist in a planning project is more related to observing and questioning the urban. The development project on which I am working brings together all these observations in a project both urban and artistic, it’s great !
