Artist Dis-Placement 07: Joel Verwimp at Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (public library)

ADP: Joel Verwimp at Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek

Placement Report. November 2018.

In May 2018 Joel Verwimp started his placement at the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek AGB/ ZLB, Berlin (public library) in cooperation with the sonntagsbureau. Joel is a Berlin-based Belgian artist. Initially trained as a visual artist and cook, he writes, curates, edits, collects and lectures.

Joel was working from Sunday 10am until Monday 9pm in the library and in addition to this presence, he spent an average of one day a week working in his studio, preparing workshops, speeches, exhibitions and performances as part of his placement.

The idea to connect artists to organizations which are situated outside the traditional art context aims at a politically active encounter between institutions, individuals, and art practices that address the public sphere on a civic level. His work for the ADP project existed to make the concept of commoning/ commons visible, both on the macro and micro scale of the organisation. The resulting score does so by building extensions into and through public/ non-public space as exemplified by the library.

His research within one of Berlin’s central organizations thus produced a score for the library which looks at the ‘invisible’ poetics of publicness, framing art as a discourse about locating the interior. The value of his involvement at the library was shown by the development of the public discourse around the library as a public place, the importance of restructuring the library as an organisation towards the commons and the central role the sonntagsbureau has taken within.

His final output included six iterations of a score which were performed at Openhaus ZK/U, as well as an “office for community relations” which was setup within the library as a concept of the future library.
